1000 Posts and VEMF 2011

Well it only took seven and a half years, but I finally passed the 1000 post mark. This blog has definitely matured from its humble, adolescent beginnings. I'm receiving more hits than ever, and my hope is that I have exposed some people to some great music in the last few years. That's what this blog is all about - good tunes!

On the topic of good tunes, this years Victoria Electronic Music Festival (July 30-31) is shaping up to be bigger than ever. Artists such as Kastle and DJ Klever have already been announced, and there's more to come. The Dreadsteppas (Dezine, Spoon, and I) will be playing the mainstage at noon on Sunday (July 31). We'll be rinsing out some big bass business and handing out some serious free swag - don't miss out! Check the Facebook event page for more info.

Tyler, The Creator - She ft. Frank Ocean

If you listen to current hip-hop, you've definitely heard about Tyler, The Creator and OFWGKTA (Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All). Not sure why MTV won't play this one; it's damn creepy for sure, but no weirder than 'Yonkers'. The video for 'She' is a good twist on the old suburban love story motif, with Tyler playing the deranged, underwear-sniffing stalker. These guys are nothing but controversial, but at the least you can appreciate their DIY ethic. GOLF WANG. Check it out.

The Notorious B.I.G. - Everyday Struggle

Alright, time for some classic hip-hop ish. Definitely feeling some Notorious B.I.G. right about now. Life feels like a constant struggle sometimes. Big ups all the people hustlin' to survive. Stay up!

Diplo - Moombahton 2k11 Mix

Been feeling a lot of the midtempo moombahton stuff coming out as of late. Here's a mixset from Diplo featuring a slew of summer bangers.

Distal - Love a la Venturo

I'm a huge fan of Distal's production, especially after hearing his set at Lucky Bar for the Surefire Sound tour. Here's a bit off his recent Android Tourism release. Top notch drum programming and pad work as usual. Be sure to checkout the title track as well. The four track EP is available now on Fortified Audio.

Photek - Rings Around Saturn (Breach Remix)

Not quite sure how I feel about this one as a testament to the original - which is an absolute classic! But as it stands on its own, I'm in to pretty much everything Breach has been putting out. He definitely spins a bit more funk into his take on Rings Around Saturn.

Benga - Smack Your Bitch Up [Free Download]

This one is BIG! Some free ish from the one like Benga. You can definitely pick out the Prodigy influences, but it's a track that stands on its own. Been hearing this one for a minute now.

Wiley - Numbers In Action

Feeling the stripped down grime beat and quirky video for this one. Wiley is the don!

Massive Attack - Angel (Flying Lotus Remix)

Flying Lotus recently released a slew of new tunes onto his SoundCloud page. None of them are downloadable but you can stream a number of fresh remixes and originals. My pick was this remix of 'Angel' by Massive Attack. Check it!

St. Kelly - Days Like Today

Here's a summer jam from a few years back by my boy, St. Kelly. Anyone from the Westshore will know this one. Haven't heard much in the way of verses from St. Kelly lately, but he's been producing for some big names from across the border. This is off his debut album, Tip of the Iceberg, self released in 2006. Pretty sure you can still cop it in and around Victoria.

Anal Cunt - You're A Cop

Nothing like a bit of grindcore to throw off whatever expectations people may have. R.I.P. Seth Putnam, a pioneer of one of the loudest, most abrasive, unmusical forms of noise inspired metal. Up da punx!

Taprikk Sweezee ft. HBO - Volt

Some glitched-out funkiness with some cool visuals and choreography to boot. You can cop the track via Bandcamp.

The Weeknd - The Morning (ill-esha's Lovestep Jam) [Free Download]

Here's a sultry, r&b-infused dubstep refix from ill-esha. Something to take the edge off another Monday.

Makai - Beneath The Mask

This one's a classic! Reminds me of late-night renegade raves out in the bush. Best use of a Ghost in the Shell sample, too.

Foreign Beggars & Lazer Sword - What's Good

Such a wicked collabo. Solid verses from the Beggars and quality future-step production from Lazer Sword. Definitely my favourite tune off the new Foreign Beggars EP, The Harder They Fall. Check their collaboration with Alix Perez too for some minimal dubstep business.

Max Romeo - Protest To The M1 (Pacheko Remix)

A bit of rebel music from Max Romeo and Pacheko. Love the animation in the video. Original and remixes out now on Senseless.

Slugabed - Moonbeam Rider

Here's the official video for Slugabed's 'Moonbeam Rider'. Definitely my favourite track off the release. Available now on Ninja Tune.

Nguzunguzu - Mirage (Girl Unit Remix)

This one is on constant rotation. Been out for a minute on Silverback Recordings. Quality output from Nguzunguzu and Girl Unit (as usual.)
