A False Prophet

Well, there you have it, the first black president of the United States of America has been inaugurated. He promises change; he promises hope. But what can Obama really do? The recession grows worse, wars rage on, and one man is supposed to change all that? The era of the United States as a super-power is coming to an end; it is slipping and with that the power will shift, as it always does. The cycle of core-periphery turns on and on; exploitation continues, and we are witnesses to nothing more than a false prophet. Yes, Obama is black; yes, he's trendy, Hollywood and the youth love him, and on the surface he promises real change, but he is still nothing more than a part of the machine. He is the president of the oppressor. Obama may mark some pseudo-civil rights victory - "then end of racist America." But America is still the same. And no one man can change it's foundation. It's too little, too late - Obama is nothing more than a false hope.

An interesting take, however I see it the other way. Barack has been hailed a savior and a prophecy to "change". However the Christian public, not in all cases of course, has spoken out against him declaring he is not a "True Christian" and has similar beliefs to Hitler.
One man cannot "change" the world however this one man just showed you, and your "machine" (assembled by you and I) there are countries full of people who demand to see drastic measures to pull our countries out of this recession and loss of hope.
I agree he may be idealized, but the Christian public by and large relies on simply one force: God.
A non-orthodox Christian or non Christian altogether relies on the power within themselves to make a decision and follow through. Voting for Barack simply says, "I have hope this man can better our world. Not himself but with the help of over 69,456,897 supporters in just his own country."

I do believe in Barack, although I am not a hugely political person by any means, but more I believe that if there are enough people that put him in power then I am not alone and am willing to live a life that is progressive as opposed to relying on one being to make the world I live in. The power is in ourselves. We decide, make changes. Our existence precedes essence. I cannot rely on someone else, Jesus or Barack, but I can be inspired (definitely not by both) and live albeit a cynical life that has little belief in others, but am willing to admit when I am wrong.

My name (It is Changing) has nothing to do with Barack.

Today, we stand naked before each other and throw our shoes at history.
Today, his words more true than ever we stop awaiting ourselves and start acting.
Today, the empire takes the flag off the mirror and stares.
Today, we see that eight years of brutality and lies were eight years of brutality and lies.
Today, more Palestinians will die.
Today, people will be force fed at Guantanamo Bay, the war will rage on in Iraq, the Taliban will regroup, and
Today, Obama you are accountable.
In your words, in our name, across the world we have smiled with you and given you your light.
Today, you find the limits of your power and depth of your ego.
and today the piggybacks stop and there is no honeymoon.
Today, you will begin to disappoint. But still
Today, we smile because America is a self-fulfilling prophecy
and even though the deepest river cannot bleed the cities of their tears
Today, the weather changes, underground or not and blows coal ash into your deep lungs. and
Today, San Francisco’s gay population will dance, naked and unmarried upon your nimble tongue. And
Today, Afghanistan will awake with a new landlord and 20 000 more troops securing a pipeline. and
Today, I am a Canadian in Korea writing about America because no matter where I go or who is leading I will reject Imperialism.
Today, Obama, either you stick your flag lapel pin to your heart or to your tongue because
Today, you have the choice whether or not to bring justice to your land and call war crimes - war crimes.
Today, a black man is president and 1 million more sit in prison cells angrily awaiting Change.
Today, promises begin to be broken.
but today we smile, naked
and thankful because
Yes we can change the world
The wait is over
Today, we come alive.
